New From DorkCo: Contest
In an effort to make my blog more interactive, it's the "figure out what it is" contest!
It's made out of 1.5" of extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam board, Cosella Doerken dimple mat (stuff you use to waterproof basements), and rubber bands. People should feel free to ask questions in the comments. Whoever identifies it correctly, um, I dunno... I'll make you dinner next time I'm in the same town as you--howzzat?
No purchase necessary. Purchases will not improve chances of winning. No person may enter any contest more than once using multiple email addresses. All entries must be received before the heat death of the universe.
Dan and Daniel are not allowed to enter, because they played the game last night. If I talked to you about this thing in the past, please don't give it away.

It looks like soundproofing, but knowing you it's some sort of weird testing device. Or a really funny-looking kludged trivet.
Questions: is it for a school project? Are you checking for moisture accumulation between surfaces?
Oh yeah- prev comment by Christy and Uboat.
I think it's for getting really nice dimple patterns on top of flat tart or creme brule type things made inside surprisingly deep pans.
Or it's an improvised incentive device, or IID, with which you beat yourself everytime you don't engage in suitable moustache care at least once a week.
Or it's a taro- or daikan- grater for getting course-grained shredded root vegetable for cooking.

I'm guessing egg-holder - I bet you could get a gross of eggs in there.
Do you sit on it when you have to sit outside and it's cold or wet?
All good questions; no winners so far.

Nothing school or research-related here. I use it around the apartment.

Nope... not food-related either.

Actually tried this out to check--the grid pattern is the wrong size for chicken eggs; they just kinda fall over. Hummingbird eggs... maybe...

Not correct, but moving in the right direction (as with the trivet)--I used each of these pieces for a reason, to take advantage of their specific properties.
Here's a half-assed hint: recent news stories suggests a layer of Kevlar might be a good addition.
Do you put your laptop on it?

I know! I know! You put it on your basement floor. The dimplemat makes the air go through so it doesn't get all moldy and stuff.
